FLIRTING WITHOUT EMBRACING:
THE TRUNCATED DEVELOPMENT OF AN INTANGIBLE COMMONS LOGIC
Studies at the intersection of institutional logic development and transnational commons governance have mostly focused on tangible commons. The development of shared understanding and convergent material actions around intangible commons may be subject to different dynamics, since intangible shared resources have different characteristics. Our empirical study addresses the truncated development of a commons logic in open-access academic publishing. We describe the evolution of open access publishing in the natural sciences and derive a process model that accounts for the mechanisms that lead to the (so far) incomplete development of an intangible commons logic.
